The WAB turns Boris Johnson`s withdrawal agreement, which is a draft international treaty, into British law and gives the government permission to ratify it. The 585-page draft withdrawal agreement negotiated between the European Union and the United Kingdom contains several highly controversial points that will be difficult to bear, especially those in favor of Brexit. Here are some of the points that could cause problems for Prime Minister Theresa May in Parliament: the Special Protocol for Northern Ireland annexed to the Withdrawal Agreement guarantees the integrity of the EU`s single market; at the same time, it will ensure that there will be no border controls between Ireland and Northern Ireland and that the Good Friday Agreement will remain in full force. The Protocol provides that Northern Ireland will remain part of the customs territory of the United Kingdom, but that all relevant provisions of the EU internal market will apply to Northern Ireland in the same way as the Union Customs Code. The agreement was revised as part of the Johnson Ministry`s renegotiation in 2019. The amendments adapt about 5% of the text. [22] The Northern Ireland Protocol, known as the “Irish backstop”, was an annex to the November 2018 draft agreement outlining provisions to prevent a hard border in Ireland following the United Kingdom`s withdrawal from the European Union. The Protocol contains a provision on a safety net to deal with circumstances in which other satisfactory arrangements have yet to enter into force at the end of the transition period. This project has been replaced by a new protocol which will be described below.
